You can picture resolution as the moment a tangled knot finally comes loose: a mess of threads gets pulled apart, sorted out, and settled — whether the knot is a problem, an argument, or a mind.

From the word’s history

From Latin resolvere = re- + solvere 'to loosen, untie, release, explain'; resolutio meant 'a loosening, a breaking into parts'. The modern senses all grow from this picture of loosening/untangling: untying a problem, settling a matter after breaking it down, a mind made firm after the wavering is resolved, and an image broken finely enough into parts to be seen clearly.
