You can picture goal as the spot you are aiming the ball at: the marked place you are trying to reach or put the ball into. From that one target on the field, the word stretches two ways — to the act and reward of actually hitting it (scoring), and, off the field, to any 'target' in life you are aiming for. The 'aim in life' sense is the most common today, but the on-field target is the more concrete, picture-bearing root.
