You can picture 'quality' as the answer to one quiet question you hold up against a thing: how good is it? Hold up two coffees, two phones, two pieces of work side by side, and 'quality' is the invisible measuring-stick that tells you which one is better made. From that one act of measuring, the word spreads in two directions: outward to the particular traits a thing has (its color, its kindness, its texture), and upward to mean simply 'good' — high on that stick.
