A pledge is a serious promise to do something, often made publicly or formally, like a pledge to give money to charity, or a pledge to stop doing something bad. As a verb, 'to pledge' means to make that kind of serious promise. In American colleges, a 'pledge' can also mean a student who has promised to join a fraternity or sorority (a social club) and is going through the process to become a full member.
