Picture an army that knows it cannot win this fight, so it turns and moves back, away from the enemy, to safer ground. 'Retreat' is that pulling-back: away from something pressing or dangerous toward somewhere safer or smaller. The noun is either that act of pulling back, or the safe place you pull back to.
