One picture you can hold for this side of the word: a narrow tube. Something travels along the inside of it, and it leaves behind a thin raised line wherever it goes. A house has a whole run of these tubes hidden in its walls. A cord wrapped in cloth looks like one lying on the edge of a cushion. The tip of an bag is one you hold in your hand, and the line of on the cake is the mark it leaves.

A second word, same spelling
The other side of the word has a different picture: a thin high sound coming out of a small pipe. Someone blows, and what comes out sits high up and stays narrow, so you can pick it out even when other sounds are louder. A child's voice does the same thing. So does a kettle just before it boils. This is a picture offered to help you hold the senses together, not a claim about where the word came from.
