You can picture a pipe as a long hollow tube — something runs along the inside from one end to the other. What runs through it varies: water or gas, smoke, or a column of air that turns into a musical note. The verbs follow the same tube: to send something through it, to push something out of its narrow end, or to make a thin high sound like one.
