The food you put on top of other food — the cheese, mushrooms and ham on a pizza; the chocolate sauce, nuts and cherry on ice cream; the sweet layer on a fruit dessert. It is a countable noun, and it is very often plural, because you usually choose several: "What toppings do you want?" "Which toppings come with it?" A topping goes ON TOP and usually goes on near the end of cooking or after the cooking is finished. That is what separates it from an ingredient or a filling: an ingredient is mixed in, a filling is hidden inside, a topping is what you can see. This word is everywhere in shops and restaurants — pizza shops, bubble-tea shops, frozen-yogurt shops — so it is a very useful word to have ready. Two smaller uses: it is also the -ing form of the verb top ("topping the cake with cream"), and in old-fashioned British speech topping was an adjective meaning excellent, which now sounds like something from a hundred-year-old novel.
