One way to hold modulate: a hand resting on a dial, not on a switch. The thing is already running — a voice, a treatment, a piece of music, a radio wave — and the hand keeps turning the dial to set how much: a little higher, a little softer, a little slower. Nothing is switched off and nothing is swapped for something else. The level is being shaped while it runs, and the shaping follows a measure rather than a , which is why a modulated voice or a modulated signal sounds controlled rather than random.

From the word’s history

The evidence packet's Wiktionary entry traces modulate to Latin modulor (to measure, regulate, modulate) plus -ate, from modulus (measure). The literal idea is to set something by a measure, which sits directly under the modern uses: the word is about adjusting to the right amount, not about replacing or switching off.

Wiktionary entry supplied in the evidence packet (source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:902451458:21930): From Latin modulor (to measure, regulate, modulate) + -ate, from modulus (measure). Compare module, modulus.

Two branches

verb · C1

To change the sound of your voice on purpose — how high or low it is, how loud it is, and what feeling it carries.

verb · C2

In music, to move from one key to another inside a piece, usually by passing through chords that belong to both keys so that the change sounds smooth.
