To encode a message is to turn it into a code — a set of signs that stand for the original words or information. The point may be secrecy (spies, wartime signals), or it may only be a system other people or machines can read: Morse, computer files, a QR code. In computer talk the verb is everyday: software encodes video, text, or pictures into a format for storing or sending. stretch it further and say a gene encodes a protein, meaning the gene holds the instructions. The word is plain and technical, not fancy. Though actually, putting something into code is not always hiding it. Hiding it on purpose is closer to , and people mix the two. There is also a rare noun encode in technical writing, but the verb is the one you will meet.
