To intensify is to become stronger in degree, or to make something stronger. Pain can intensify at night. Police can intensify a search. You can use it with no object (the smell intensified) or with an object (they intensified the search). News writers use it for fighting, pressure, and storms; science uses it for light, colour, and heat. It is a little more formal than “get stronger” or “step up,” but it is not rare. Though actually, intensify does not tell you if the feeling is happy or sad — joy can intensify, and fear can too. It only names the rise. Compare French .
