Picture the moment a game ends and the two sides separate: one side is up, one side is down. The word points at the side that is down. Then watch how far that pointing finger can travel. Keep it on a match and you have the plain result. Move it to the aftermath of a strike or a price rise, and it lands on whoever ended up with less.
