From Middle English lengeren, a frequentative of lengen (to stay, tarry), from Old English lengan — to lengthen, to make longer, to delay. The core is literally length: linger is time being stretched past where it should have stopped.
linger 來自中古英語 lengeren，是 lengen（停留、耽擱）的反覆體，再往前是古英語 lenġan——「加長、延長、拖延」。也就是說這個字骨子裡就是 long（長）那一家的親戚。知道這一點，整個字就通了：linger 不是「停下來」，是「把時間拉長」。該結束的地方被硬生生拉出一截尾巴，那截尾巴就是 linger。
