Staying longer than is usual — or longer than you wanted. A lingering smell will not go away. Lingering doubts are worries that stay in the mind. A lingering look is one you hold a little too long. The feeling is often slightly uncomfortable (a lingering pain, a lingering fear), though actually not always: a lingering sunset can just mean the light stayed beautiful for a long time. It comes from , “to stay and not leave yet.” You will also see lingering as the ordinary -ing form of that verb: she is lingering at the door. As an adjective before a noun (a lingering cough), it is a little more written than spoken; in talk people often just say still there or will not go away.
