You can picture life as the simple fact of being alive — there is a spark in a person, an animal, a plant that a stone or a corpse does not have. Everything else this word does grows out of that one spark: the time the spark lasts (a lifetime), the way you spend that time (your daily life), and the energy and movement that the spark gives off (a street full of life).
