One way to picture 'death': the moment a life stops — the end, when a person or animal no longer lives. From that single, heavy fact the word spreads: one counted case of someone dying, the end of any thing (an idea, a way of life), the dark figure who stands for dying in old stories, and a whole cluster of everyday phrases that borrow 'death' as the ultimate extreme — 'bored to death', 'at death's door' — using the biggest possible word to push a feeling to its limit.
