Picture the one river everything floats down — the medium we live inside, flowing whether we watch it or not. Every use ladles from it: cut a point out (a clock moment, an occasion), scoop a stretch (a period, an era, a free slot), count the splashes going by (how often, 'how many times'), measure how long a stretch takes (a race result), or reach in to plan or clock the flow (the verb).
