From Latin adaequātus 'made equal to', from ad- 'to' + aequāre 'to make level'; with the negative in- it names something not brought level with what it must match.
adequate 來自拉丁文 adaequātus，意思是「被弄到跟…齊平」（ad-「向」+ aequus「平的、相等的」）；前面加上否定的 in-，字面就是「沒有被拉到齊平」。這正好解釋了現代的核心畫面：有一條「需要達到」的線，而這東西沒有跟它齊平。
