Self-doubt is the feeling that you yourself are not good enough — not able enough, not ready enough, not the kind of person who should try. It is not the same as a useful check, like “I have not this yet.” That is about a task. Self-doubt sits on the person: a quiet voice that says the weak spot is you. People use the word in ordinary talk, in advice, and in psychology. You can feel a wave of it before a test or a talk, or carry it for years. It is not rude and not a joke, though friends may say it lightly: “I had a bit of self-doubt.” Teachers and coaches talk about fighting it. Though actually, a little of it is extremely common; almost nobody has none. Looking sure of yourself on the outside does not prove the feeling is gone.
