One way to hold the word: every community has a way of doing things that its own people never have to think about. Speakers of a language reach for certain wordings without choosing them. Guitarists let their hands fall in certain shapes. Programmers in one language keep reaching for the same few moves. Idiomatic points at that settled house style — the version an insider would produce without effort. It never means correct; correctness is a different test, and something can pass it and still sound foreign.

From Ancient Greek idíōma, one's own way of speaking, and idiōmatikós, relating to an idiom. The root already carries the idea of something belonging to a particular group and no one else.
