Canonical means officially accepted as the standard, correct, or most authoritative version of something. It's used for texts (the canonical version of a story, as opposed to fan-made or alternate versions), and in maths, computer science, or writing systems for the standard, simplest way of writing something down, which everyone agrees to use.
