You can hold the picture of a small curved piece of metal — a bend with often a sharp tip — whose whole job is to catch and hold. Hang a coat on the curve, snag a fish on the point: the curve grabs what passes and won't let go. Almost every sense of 'hook' is this one shape doing its one job — catching and holding — whether it's a real metal curve, a curved punch, or a song that 'catches' you.
