    To take something off a hook, or to undo a that works like a small hook. Two everyday pictures sit inside this one word. First, lifting a thing off the hook it hangs on: you unhook your coat from the back of the door, unhook a picture from the wall, unhook a fish from a fishing line. Second, and just as common, opening clothes and jewellery that close with little hooks or clasps: unhook a bra, unhook a necklace, unhook a dress at the back. English uses unhook here even when the is a tiny metal clasp rather than a real hook. It is a plain, everyday verb — no formality at all, and no strong feeling attached. People also unhook things that are plugged in or connected, especially cables and hoses: 'unhook the trailer lights', 'unhook the phone'. In older English 'to unhook the phone' meant to lift the receiver off so nobody could call you, which is where 'off the hook' (= no longer in trouble) comes from. As a picture, it can also mean freeing yourself from something that had you caught — 'he finally unhooked himself from that job' — though this stretched use is not very frequent.

組成un- (undo, reverse) + hook (鉤子). The un- traces back through Old English an-/on- to a very old root meaning 'against, opposite'.
