From Ancient Greek hektikós ('habitual, continuous'), used by Greek doctors for the persistent low fever of consumption; it entered English via Old French etique / Medieval Latin hecticus meaning 'feverish, consumptive'. The fever sense came first; the 'frantically busy' sense is a modern extension of it.
