noun · B2
The basic training or knowledge in a subject or a skill that you get at the start, and that everything you learn later is built on top of.
One way to hold this word: every use of grounding points at the ground — the floor under your feet, the sea floor under a boat, the earth a wire runs down to. The ground does two jobs in these pictures. It is the flat thing you build on, so what you put there stands up and can be added to. It is also the thing that holds something in place, so what is on it cannot fly off or slip away. The training sense is the first job: level the base, then build. The stopped plane, the child kept at home, the ship stuck on the bottom are the second job: the ground has them. And a person's grounding is the quiet version of both — feet really on the floor, so the wind does not move you.
Wiktionary's surface analysis of the word is simply ground + -ing — the -ing noun of ground. That is why every branch still reads as something happening at, on, or down to the ground.

An official order that stops an aircraft from flying — one plane, or every plane of one type — and the time that order lasts, usually because flying would not be safe.
