temporary stop · noun · B2
a time when something is officially stopped for a while, and may start again later
Picture something lifted off the ground and left hanging in mid-air — not dropped, not set back down, just held. 'Suspension' is that state of being held up and held off.
From Latin suspendere 'to hang up', from sub 'up from under' + pendere 'to hang'. Every branch keeps the literal hanging: an activity hung up in the air, a person's rights hung up, a car body hung on springs, solid bits hung in a liquid.
