noun · B2
A piece of women's underwear that fits tightly around the waist, stomach, hips and bottom, and holds the body in so that it looks slimmer.
Picture a band tied around a waist, all the way round, meeting itself again at the front. That closed ring is what this word carries everywhere. Pull the band tight against the body and you get the shaping underwear. Make the band out of stone and put a town inside it and you get a ring of walls. Make it out of trees and put a lake inside it and the trees girdle the lake. The point is never 'beside' or 'along one side'. It is always 'right the way round, and back to the start'.
The source traces the word to Old English gyrdel, from gird plus -le, so it began as the thing you gird yourself with — the band itself.
Wiktionary via kaikki (source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:644200455:38803): "From Middle English girdel … from Old English gyrdel … equivalent to gird + -le."
