A corset is a very tight piece of underwear that wraps around a woman's middle. It has stiff bones or other hard pieces sewn in, so it holds the waist in and changes the shape of the body. Women wore it especially in the past, when a small waist was the fashionable look — though actually it was not only for looking thin. For a long time it was simply what 'proper' clothes were built on, and many kinds of women wore some version of it, not only rich ones. Today you still see corsets, but more as fashion, stage dress, or a special outfit, not as everyday underwear. It is an old-fashioned or costume word unless you are talking about history or style. There is a rare verb too, to corset someone, meaning to lace them into one, or, by a stretch, to hold something in very tightly.
