    The strip of cloth at the top of trousers, a skirt, or shorts — the band that goes round your waist and holds the clothes up. It is the part with the button and the belt loops, or, on sports clothes and , the part. People talk about it mostly when it is uncomfortable: 'the waistband is too tight', 'an elastic waistband', 'the waistband has stretched'. Shops use the word too, in sizes and descriptions — 'adjustable waistband', 'high waistband'. It is an ordinary, everyday word, not formal, and it names one specific part of a garment, not the whole top of it.
