A griddle is a heavy metal plate, often round and made of iron, that you heat and cook on. You set it on a stove or over a fire. People cook meat, vegetables, , and eggs on it. It has no high sides like a pan, so the food sits on a wide flat face. It is also not a grill: a grill has bars with gaps, and a griddle is a closed sheet, so the food cooks on the hot metal and does not fall through. Though actually many breakfast shops use a huge , not a round plate — cooks still call that flat hot surface a griddle. As a verb, to griddle something is to cook it on that plate. Home cooks and breakfast places use the word. It is ordinary kitchen English, a little more exact than pan.
組成From Middle English gridil, from Anglo-Norman gredil, a form of Old French greil, from Latin crāticulum, a little lattice (from crātis). Doublet of grill (“grid of wire”) and of grate — sister words from the same Old French and Latin sources.
