A note on the data first: this entry is headed departmental and tagged as a noun, but every sense below defines the NOUN department. The actual adjective departmental means 'relating to a department' (a departmental meeting, the departmental budget) and none of those uses appear here. What the senses do describe is department: one marked-off section of a bigger whole — a floor of a hospital, a counter in a store, and from there the marked-off patch of work or of personality that belongs to one person.
