Picture a line drawn down the middle of something — a road, a river, a wall, a page. That one line splits the space into two: a left and a right. Each of those flanking areas is a 'side'. The word always points away from the centre toward one of the parts that lie alongside it. Almost everything 'side' does later grows from this one picture: a left-and-right, a part-that-flanks-a-middle.
