Middle English demure is a shortening of Anglo-Norman de mure port, 'with a mature bearing', where mure is related to Latin mātūrus, mature. The original idea was a grown-up, settled way of carrying yourself, and that steadiness is still what the modern pose shows.
中古英語的 demure 是把古法語 de mure port（帶著成熟穩重的舉止）縮短而來，其中的 mure 跟拉丁文 mātūrus（成熟）有關。原本的重點是「舉止老成、不毛躁」，今天那個安靜端正的姿態，展示的還是同一種穩。
