Describes a person (or sometimes a place or thing) who does not push themselves forward, does not act important, and does not expect people to treat them as special. An unassuming person may actually be very skilled, rich, or famous — that is often the point of using the word. You say it when someone's outside appearance is quieter than what is really inside them. It is warm praise, always. English has many words for 'not proud', but they feel different: 'humble' can suggest a person who thinks little of themselves, and 'shy' suggests fear of people. 'Unassuming' suggests neither — the person is comfortable, friendly, just not asking for attention. So a famous professor who queues for lunch like everyone else is unassuming, not humble and not shy. Used of a building, a shop, or a street, it means plain-looking and easy to walk past — often with the hint that something good is hidden inside: 'an unassuming little restaurant'. The word is slightly formal and much more common in writing than in daily speech; in speech people are more likely to say 'down-to-earth' or 'he doesn't show off'.
組成un- ('not') + assuming. 'Assuming' here is an old adjective meaning 'acting as if you deserve importance' — from 'assume' in the sense of taking something for yourself, such as taking a rank or a right you were never given. So 'unassuming' = not taking for yourself anything you were not given. Note that this 'assuming' is almost dead as an adjective in modern English; the negative form is the one that survived.
