You can picture innocent as a clean, unstained surface: nothing wrong has touched this person. The Latin root in-nocere literally means 'not harming' — no harm done by them, and in the softer senses, no harm even meant. From there it stretches two ways: toward 'free of guilt/blame' (a court clears you) and toward 'free of knowledge of bad things' (a child has not yet been marked by the dark side of life).
