Self-assured describes a person who is calm and sure of themselves. It is the adjective that matches the noun 'self-assurance'. You use it before a noun ('a self-assured young woman') or after be/seem/look ('he seemed very self-assured'). The picture it gives is someone relaxed: they do not fidget, they do not apologise for speaking, they do not need you to agree with them. That is why it often appears with words like calm, quiet, easy, and relaxed. It is a little more formal and a little more written than 'confident', and it says something about the person rather than about one moment — you would say 'I'm confident we'll win', not 'I'm self-assured we'll win'. Self-assured has no object after it in that way; it just sits on the person. Usually it is warm praise, but the tone depends on the speaker: 'a very self-assured young man' can be , or can carry a small dry note meaning he thinks rather well of himself. English also uses it kindly of children and young people who seem older than their years.
