One way to hold comp: it is not really a word with a meaning of its own. It is the front of a longer word, kept because the speakers already know which long word is meant. Picture a long com- word being cut after the first syllable and the rest thrown away. becomes comp. Compensation becomes comp. Comprehensive school becomes comp. The four letters carry no meaning by themselves, so the room you are standing in has to supply it: in a restaurant it is the free dessert, in an office it is your pay, in a British town it is the school down the road.
