A compositor is someone whose job is to arrange words, pictures, and spaces on a page so a book, newspaper, or poster can be printed. In the old print shop this meant setting metal letters by hand, one by one, into lines — that worker was also called a typesetter. Later the same job moved to film, then to a screen, but the idea stayed: decide what sits where before the page is printed. It is a workplace word, not an everyday one. Though actually, if you watch film credits you will also see compositor: there it means a person who layers pictures together (an actor, a street, smoke, and so on). Same “putting together” family, different workplace. This entry is the print-page one.
