看得見的方格
這一支就是畫面本身,直接用來形容東西的表面。
adjective · B1
Covered with a pattern of squares in two different colours, with the colours taking turns, like a chessboard or a picnic cloth.
格子花紋的
Hold a in your mind: squares of the same size, set in rows, and the two colours changing place one square at a time. Light, dark, light, dark. Nothing in that pattern stays the same for long, and nothing about it is random either — the turns are regular. That surface is what the word describes, and English can lay it over a or over a lifetime.
Wiktionary derives the word from checker + -ed, in a family that goes back to check. The -ed ending means the thing has been made into squares, which is why the chessboard picture sits so close to the surface.
Wiktionary 把這個字拆成 checker + -ed,整個家族再往上接到 check。-ed 表示「被弄成那樣」,所以 checkered 字面就是「被弄成方格的」。棋盤的畫面一直貼在字的表面上,沒有走遠。

攤在時間上的方格
把棋盤從布面搬到時間軸上:一段好、一段壞,交替出現。這一支是比喻性的用法,不是說那段歷史真的有格子。
adjective · B2
