    A checkerboard is the board you play checkers on. It has sixty-four squares: thirty-two light and thirty-two dark, taking turns. In American English the game is checkers; in Britain people more often call the same game draughts, but they still know this board. Though actually, a is this same eight-by-eight mix of squares — chess just uses different pieces. People also stretch the word to any floor, field, or cloth that looks like those two-colour squares, and you can checkerboard a floor by laying tiles that way. It is an ordinary picture-word, not slang and not fancy.
