A chessboard is the square board you play chess on. It has 64 small squares, eight by eight, coloured in turn dark and light (often called black and white). At the start, each player’s pieces stand on their own two rows. Though actually, people also use it as a picture-word. A “political chessboard” is a situation where groups are moving against each other like pieces in a game. The first meaning, and the one you can touch, is still the real board. The pattern of dark and light squares also shows up on floors and , and then people may say something “looks like a chessboard.”
