You can think of 'bang' as one short, violent burst — a hard thing meeting another hard thing all at once, throwing off a loud noise. From that single instant everything else grows: the sound itself, the act of hitting that makes it, the slamming and knocking, even the idea of landing 'square on' a target the way a blow lands dead-centre, and the lively, all-at-once energy of starting or ending 'with a bang'.
