From Latin explodere 'to drive out by clapping', ex- 'out' + plaudere 'to clap'. It began as a theatre word — clapping and hissing to drive an actor off the stage — so a loud noise driving something out was baked in from the start; only later did it mean a violent, noisy bursting.
