You can think of alarmed as the second an alarm goes off. Inside a person, the alarm is the jump of attention: Mei smells smoke, and before she has worked anything out she is alarmed. On a door or a building, the alarm is a real box on the wall, switched on and waiting: this door is alarmed. Same warning, two places for it — in the chest, or on the wall.
