Receive is the 'getting' end of giving: something comes toward you from someone else, and it lands in your hands. Hold that picture — you stand still and a thing (a gift, a letter, a signal, even a blow) arrives at you. Almost every meaning is this same arrow pointing AT you: you are the one it comes to, not the one who sends it out.
