Think of something pressing down and the thing underneath choosing not to fight it. A hand presses a mattress and the mattress lets the hand in. That is the whole word. The two meanings are the same movement with a different thing underneath: once it is a surface, once it is a person, and in both cases the pressure comes from outside and is allowed through.
