Think of something held back finally being driven out and landing on a target: a storm that has been building all week, or an anger that has been stored for years. Wreak is that letting-out. The word rarely stands alone any more — it needs a partner such as havoc, destruction, revenge or vengeance to say what exactly is being let out — but the picture stays the same in every partnership: a force leaves one side, arrives on the other, and the other side is left changed.
