To avenge is to hurt or punish someone because they have harmed you, or harmed someone you love, or done a serious wrong. It is the verb for 'making them pay' after an injury or an insult. The word feels a little like stories, films, and history — more than kitchen-table talk, where people might say get back at or make them pay. Though actually, careful English likes to keep avenge and revenge apart: you avenge a person or a wrong (you do it for them, or for the injury), and you take revenge on the one who did it. In real life even native speakers mix the two, and many just use revenge for everything. Superhero films have made a household word, which keeps avenge alive in a slightly comic-book way.
組成From Middle English avengen, borrowed from Old French avengier (a- + vengier), going back to Latin vindicare, to claim or punish a wrong.
