Picture forgive as your grip on something someone owes you — the anger, the grudge, even a debt — and choosing to stop holding it against them.

From the word’s history

From Old English forgiefan 'give up, remit (a debt), pardon' — for- 'completely' + giefan 'to give'. To forgive is literally to give the thing owed away completely, whether it is money or a wrong done to you.
