To ravage something is to damage it very badly, usually on a large scale: war ravages a city, fire ravages a forest, disease can ravage a community. It is a strong verb, a little formal or news-like. You would not normally say you ravaged your homework; the harm is big, wild, and often hard to undo. There is also a noun, most often in the plural (the ravages of…). Though actually, writers also use ravaged for a person’s face or body when illness, grief, or time has worn them down, which is a picture, not about buildings. Do not mix it up with ravish, a different and mostly literary word about seizing someone or filling them with strong feeling.
組成From French ravage (havoc, spoil), from ravir (to bear away suddenly), from Latin rapere (to snatch, seize), akin to Ancient Greek ἁρπάζω (harpázō, to seize).
